Sweet violet (Viola odorata), of the Violaceae family. Low stemless perennial spreading by runners, with heart-shaped leaves; native range: Europe, North Africa and western Asia; naturalised and cultivated widely. Globally recognized as banaphsha in Hindi, banafsaj (بنفسج) in Arabic, and garden violet, English violet in English. The part used is flower and leaf; whole herb. Deep violet, spurred flowers of a soft, unmistakable sweet scent; the leaves cool, faintly mucilaginous and bland on the tongue.
