Usnea (Usnea barbata), of the Parmeliaceae (lichen) family. Pendulous fruticose lichen of branching grey-green threads with a tell-tale white elastic core; native range: Cool, clean-aired temperate forests worldwide, draping the bark and branches of trees. Globally recognized as shaileya / charila in Sanskrit, chharila / patthar-phool in Hindi, ushna / shaiba in Arabic, and old man's beard, beard lichen, tree moss, tree's dandruff in English. The part used is whole thallus (lichen). Hair-fine, branching grey-green strands; gently pulled apart they reveal a white rubbery central cord that stretches — the sure mark of Usnea; faintly bitter and aromatic.
