Wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum), of the Lamiaceae family. Low creeping aromatic perennial subshrub, mat-forming, with small opposite leaves and dense heads of pink-purple flowers; native range: Europe and northern Asia, through the western Himalaya; on dry banks, heath and stony ground. Globally recognized as hasha · sa'tar barri in Arabic, hasha in Persian, hasha · banajwain in Urdu, and wild thyme, creeping thyme, mother of thyme in English. The part used is the aerial parts — leaf and flowering top. Small dark leaves on wiry creeping stems, sharply and warmly aromatic of thyme when rubbed; the taste pungent, aromatic and biting, with a lingering bitterish heat.
