Selenite (crystalline gypsum) (Gypsum), of the sulfate mineral family. Clear to translucent tabular or bladed crystals, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, splitting into flat plates; native range: salt-lake beds and evaporite deposits, where clear tabular crystals grow in the saline clay. Globally recognized as 元精石 yuan jing shi, 太陰玄精石 tai yin xuan jing shi in Chinese, and selenite, crystallised gypsum in English. The part used is the crystal, ground fine. Colourless to pale grey and glassy, pearly on the cleavage, cool to the tongue, so soft it flakes into thin sheets.
