Cabbage rose (Rosa centifolia), of the Rosaceae family. Dense, many-petalled shrub rose; native range: A cultivated rose of ancient garden origin, long grown around the Mediterranean and in Persia and India. Globally recognized as shatapatri in Sanskrit, gulab in Hindi, ward (ورد) in Arabic, and Provence rose, hundred-leaved rose in English. The part used is flower (petals). Full globular blooms of soft pink, heavy with a sweet cool fragrance, faintly astringent and bittersweet on the tongue.
