Storax (Liquidambar orientalis), of the Altingiaceae (formerly Hamamelidaceae) family. Large deciduous tree with maple-like palmate leaves yielding a fragrant balsam from the wounded bark; native range: The sweetgum forests of south-western Anatolia (Turkey), the classical source of Levant storax. Globally recognized as silarasa / turushka in Sanskrit, silaras in Hindi, su he xiang (苏合香) in Chinese, mai'a sailah (ميعة سائلة, liquid storax) in Arabic, and liquid storax, styrax, Levant storax, sweetgum balsam in English. The part used is the exuded balsamic resin (liquid storax). A thick, sticky, grey-brown semi-fluid balsam, sinking in water, with a warm, sweet, balsamic, faintly cinnamon-and-benzoin fragrance that clings and warms.
