St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), of the Hypericaceae (formerly Clusiaceae/Guttiferae) family. Erect much-branched herbaceous perennial to 1 m, woody at the base, with opposite sessile leaves and terminal cymes of five-petalled flowers; native range: Europe, western Asia and North Africa; now naturalised across temperate North America, Australia and East Asia (a noxious rangeland weed abroad). Globally recognized as guan ye lian qiao (貫葉連翹) / qian ceng lou in Chinese, hufariqun (حوفاريقون) / dadhi in Arabic, and Klamath weed, goatweed, hypericum, Tipton weed, amber, rosin rose, chase-devil in English. The part used is flowering tops (aerial parts in bud and bloom). Bright yellow five-petalled stars edged with black dots; the leaf held up shows scattered pellucid oil-glands like pinpricks, and the buds and petals rubbed between the fingers stain them purple-red with hypericin and yield a faint balsamic, resinous scent.
