Honey, of the Apidae (Insecta) family. The honeybee — a social insect of the Apidae; honey is the ripened, capped nectar it stores in the comb; native range: wherever the honeybee is kept or hunted; the classical drug is the comb-honey of Apis cerana in Asia, of Apis mellifera in the west. Globally recognized as feng mi (蜂蜜), bai mi (白蜜) in Chinese, madhu, kṣaudra in Sanskrit, shahad in Hindi, asal in Arabic, and honey in English. The part used is the honey, drained or pressed from the comb. A thick, clear-to-amber syrup, intensely sweet with an astringent finish that catches the throat, faintly sour, floral in smell, granulating pale over time.
In this cross-tradition database, we analyze how this substance operates across world medicine systems — tracking its traditional tastes, temperatures, tissue affinities, post-digestive effects, and planetary correspondences across Ayurveda, Unani, and Western herbalism.

Actions
- TCM
- tonifies the Middle burner and augments qi, moistens dryness, moistens the Intestines and unblocks the bowels, relieves toxicity (notably of aconite), and harmonizes the other drugs of a formula
- Ayurveda
- yogavahi (carries whatever is ground into it inward), lekhana and chedana (scrapes and cuts through kapha and fat), vranashodhana-ropana (cleanses and heals wounds), and chakshushya (benefits the eyes)

Cautions
- Contraindications
- damp-phlegm and Spleen damp with fullness; diarrhoea; diabetes, honey being frank sugar; not to be given to an infant under a year, for the risk of botulism
- Toxicity
- no toxicity as such. Ayurveda holds heated honey to be ama-visha, a poison, and forbids the warm pan and equal quantities of honey and ghee as viruddha (incompatible); the other witnesses do not carry that rule. Honey from certain rhododendron nectars is frankly poisonous ('mad honey')
