Wild turmeric (Curcuma aromatica), of the Zingiberaceae family. Rhizomatous perennial herb with broad lily-like leaves and a spring cone of pink bracts; native range: moist deciduous forests of the Indian subcontinent and southern China. Globally recognized as vanaharidra / aranya haridra in Sanskrit, jangli haldi / ban haldi in Hindi, yu jin (郁金) in Chinese, darzard barri in Arabic, and wild turmeric, cochin turmeric, yellow zedoary in English. The part used is rhizome (root tuber). A stout rhizome, orange-yellow within and camphoraceous, more bitter and aromatic than common turmeric.
