Coconut (Cocos nucifera), of the Arecaceae (Palmae) family. Tall single-stemmed palm crowned with pinnate fronds; native range: Indo-Pacific coasts; spread by ocean currents and seafarers across all tropical shores. Globally recognized as narikela / langali / trinaraja in Sanskrit, nariyal in Hindi, narjil / jauz-e-hindi in Arabic, and coconut palm, coco, copra palm in English. The part used is endosperm (kernel and water), oil from the dried kernel (copra). The green nut holds a clear, faintly sweet, cooling water; the ripe kernel is white, rich, oily and sweet, hardening to copra from which the bland oil is pressed.
In this cross-tradition database, we analyze how this substance operates across world medicine systems — tracking its traditional tastes, temperatures, tissue affinities, post-digestive effects, and planetary correspondences across Ayurveda, Unani, and Western herbalism.
