Toon tree (Toona ciliata), of the Meliaceae family. Large deciduous tree with pinnate leaves and reddish, fragrant wood; native range: sub-Himalayan tracts and moist forests of the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia. Globally recognized as tunna · nandi-vriksha in Sanskrit, toon · tun in Hindi, and toon tree, red cedar, Indian mahogany in English. The part used is bark; also flowers. Rough reddish-brown bark, astringent and bitterish; small honey-scented flowers.
