Aromatic annual with feathery blue-green foliage and flat umbels of yellow flowers; native range: Mediterranean and south-western Asia. Globally recognized as shatapushpa · misi in Sanskrit, soya · sowa in Hindi, shi luo (莳萝) in Chinese, and shibt in Arabic. The part used is fruit (seed), chiefly; also the leaf. Flattened, winged, pale-brown seeds; warm and sweetish-pungent with a caraway-like aroma from their volatile oil (rich in carvone).
