Ambergris (Physeter macrocephalus), of the Physeteridae (Mammalia) family. The great toothed sperm whale of the deep oceans; the drug is the concretion it voids; native range: the sperm whale ranges the deep open oceans worldwide; the concretion is gathered beach-cast or afloat on tropical and temperate shores. Globally recognized as ambara in Sanskrit, ambar ash-hab (grey ambergris) in Arabic, and ambergris, grey amber in English. The part used is the waxy intestinal concretion (ambergris), gathered beach-cast or floating. Waxy grey to blackish lumps, lighter than water and softening in the hand, with a sweet, earthy, marine-musky odour that deepens as the mass weathers and oxidises.
