Lesser galangal (Alpinia officinarum), of the Zingiberaceae family. Reed-like perennial rising from a slender, branching rhizome; native range: Southern China (Guangdong, Hainan) and neighbouring South-East Asia. Globally recognized as kulanjana in Sanskrit, kulanjan in Hindi, gao liang jiang (高良薑) in Chinese, and khulanjan in Arabic. The part used is rhizome. Reddish-brown, ringed and knotty, harder and drier than ginger; the flesh bites hot and peppery with a resinous, faintly camphoraceous warmth.

In this cross-tradition database, we analyze how this substance operates across world medicine systems — tracking its traditional tastes, temperatures, tissue affinities, post-digestive effects, and planetary correspondences across Ayurveda, Unani, and Western herbalism.
