Calamus (Acorus calamus), of the Acoraceae (formerly placed in Araceae) family. Aromatic marginal-water perennial with erect sword-shaped leaves from a creeping rhizome; native range: circumboreal wetlands across Asia, Europe and North America. Globally recognized as vaca / ugragandha in Sanskrit, bach / gorbach in Hindi, chang pu (菖蒲) in Chinese, waj in Arabic, and sweet flag in English. The part used is rhizome. Pinkish-buff rhizome, spongy within, intensely aromatic and warmly bitter — a scent hovering between tangerine peel and cinnamon.
